Explanation

Living without taking care of oneself, careless of health, honour and mind, opens the door to every sorrow. Valluvar too speaks of the need to guard oneself if one truly loves oneself.

The second line is slander: words spoken behind one's back by those who dare not say them to one's face. It poisons the mind of the listener and destroys relationships from within. The third line is the company of those without goodness, and the fourth names where all this ends: the downfall of old and noble houses.

The Ramayana shows how the whispered words of the hunchbacked Manthara tore apart the royal family of Ayodhya. Gossip spreading through groups and workplaces today does the same damage. Dharma is to speak of someone's fault to that person directly, and with kindness.

From the Valmiki Ramayana (Ayodhya Kanda)

Manthara's Whispers

From the Valmiki Ramayana. King Dasharatha resolved to crown Rama, and all Ayodhya decked itself for the festival. Kaikeyi too rejoiced at the news and rewarded the one who brought it; she loved Rama as much as her own son Bharata.

But Kaikeyi's hunchbacked maid Manthara watched the celebrations from the palace terrace and seethed. She came to Kaikeyi and began to whisper: "You rejoice, foolish woman! When Rama is king, Kausalya will be queen mother and you will be her servant. Bharata will be Rama's slave, or be driven out of the kingdom."

At first Kaikeyi brushed her aside. But Manthara would not stop; word by word she sowed fear and suspicion. "Ask now for the two boons Dasharatha once promised you: the crown for Bharata, and fourteen years of exile in the forest for Rama." Slowly the poison sank in. Kaikeyi went into the chamber of anger and lay on the floor.

As a result Rama went to the forest, Dasharatha died of grief, Bharata turned against his mother, and Ayodhya was drowned in tears. Slander from one who would not speak openly tore a great house apart.

Yet Bharata would not sit on the throne; he ruled with Rama's sandals placed upon it, and in the end it was that love that saved the house.

To reflect on

When you hear gossip about someone, what do you do to stop it or turn it aside?
