Valmiki Ramayana, Bala KandaGanga in Shiva's Locks
From the Valmiki Ramayana, Bala Kanda. To free his ancestors, Bhagiratha performed fierce penance and brought the Ganga down from heaven to earth. But there was a problem: the earth could not bear the Ganga falling from the sky at full force; she would sweep the world away.
Bhagiratha prayed to Shiva. Shiva stood with his matted locks spread wide. The plunging Ganga was caught in his locks and swirled there until her force was spent.
Then Shiva released a single small lock, and the Ganga came down to earth as a gentle stream, little by little. The earth could bear her then, and wherever she flowed, the land flourished.
