Explanation

Avoid eating flesh, killing and theft, says Avvaiyar. All three harm other beings: eating flesh takes a creature's body, killing takes its life, and theft takes the fruit of someone's labour.

Our tradition also believes that anyone can change. Even one who walked a wicked path can, by grace, reform and become great.

Divya Suri Charitam (life of Thirumangai Alvar)

The Change of Heart of Thirumangai Alvar

From the life of Thirumangai Alvar. A chieftain named Neelan vowed to feed a thousand Vaishnava devotees every day. When his wealth ran out, he turned to highway robbery to keep that vow.

One day he waylaid a wedding procession and seized all the jewels. Unable to pull a toe-ring off the bridegroom's foot, he bit it off with his teeth. But when he tried to lift the bundle of loot, it would not move. 'What spell have you cast?' he demanded.

The bridegroom was Vishnu himself, and the bride Lakshmi. The Lord whispered into his ear the eight-syllable mantra, 'Om Namo Narayanaya'. At that moment Neelan was transformed and became Thirumangai Alvar, who sang great hymns. The one who gave up theft was won by the Lord's grace.
