Explanation

Gather grain and money thriftily, says Avvaiyar. One who saves without waste has no worry in hard times. The word sikkena suggests both firmness and care: every grain and every coin has value.

This is not miserliness but thoughtful saving. Having condemned hoarding in an earlier line, Avvaiyar here praises saving. Dharma lies in the balance between the two.

Kashi tradition

Annapurna and Shiva

From the tradition of Kashi. Once Shiva said that food and all worldly things are only illusion. Hearing this, Parvati disappeared to show the world the value of food. At once food vanished from the world, and hunger spread everywhere.

Seeing all beings wasting away, Shiva himself took a begging bowl and stood before Parvati, who had appeared in Kashi as Annapurna, asking for food. She fed him with love.

The story reminds us that every grain is a gift of grace, to be valued and saved with care.
