Mahabharata, Sauptika ParvaAshwatthama's Night Raid
From the Mahabharata, Sauptika Parva. At the end of the war, Ashwatthama burned for revenge over the death of his father Drona and the fall of Duryodhana. Lying under a tree at night, he saw an owl kill a flock of sleeping crows.
Seeing that, a cruel idea took hold of him. That very night he entered the Pandava camp and killed Dhrishtadyumna, the five sons of Draupadi and many warriors as they slept.
A man once honoured as a hero became, through petty vengeance, one who killed the sleeping. By Krishna's curse, he was doomed to wander alone for ages.
