Sthala Purana of ThiruvalangaduThe Dance Contest at Thiruvalangadu
From the sthala purana of Thiruvalangadu. In a forest of banyan trees the goddess Kali was dancing with great fury, and the whole world shook with the force of her dance. The sages prayed to Shiva. He came to that burning ground and called Kali to a dance contest.
The two danced as equals; every movement Shiva made, Kali matched. Then Shiva's earring fell. Without stopping the dance, He picked it up with His foot, raised the foot straight up to the sky and put the earring back in His ear. This is the Urdhva Tandava, the dance of the raised leg. Out of modesty Kali would not dance that pose, and the contest ended in calm.
This dance of Shiva and Shakti in the burning ground shows us the scene the verse calls 'the burning ground that is His dance stage'.
