Abirami Andhadhi 95 ·

Nanrae varukinum, theethae vilaikinum, naan arivathu / Onraeyum illai, unakkae param: enakku ullam ellaam / Anrae unathu enru aliththu vittaen: azhiyaatha kunak / Kunrae, arutkatalae, imavaan petra koamalamae.

Meaning

Whether good comes or harm results, I know nothing of it; the burden is all yours. That very day I gave my whole heart to you, saying, 'It is yours.' O mountain of undying virtues! O ocean of grace! O tender one born to Himavan!

Explanation

The previous verse ended 'is good indeed' (nandre); this begins 'whether good' (nandre). This verse is the summit of surrender in Abirami Andhadhi.

'Whether good or harm comes, I do not know; it is all your responsibility.' This is not shirking responsibility. It is the peace of one who has already given everything, saying 'my whole heart is yours'. One does not keep worrying about what one has given away. That is why he calls the Mother 'ocean of grace': a drop that has fallen into the ocean has no worries of its own any more.

Mahabharata, Sabha Parva

Draupadi Raises Both Hands in Surrender

From the Mahabharata. Having lost everything at the game of dice, the Pandavas at last lost Draupadi too. Dushasana dragged her into the assembly and began to strip off her garment in front of everyone. Her husbands sat with bowed heads; the elders were silent.

At first Draupadi held on to her garment with one hand and called on Krishna with the other. No help came. Then she clutched her garment with both hands and cried out. Still none came. At last she let go of her garment, raised both hands above her head and surrendered completely: 'Govinda! You alone are my refuge!' At that instant her garment became endless, and Dushasana collapsed in exhaustion. This is the form in which the story is widely told in popular tradition.

As long as she kept some hold of her own, the full grace did not come; at the moment she let go of everything and said 'the burden is yours', grace came. Bhattar's surrender is the same: 'That very day I gave my whole heart to you, saying it is yours.'
