Explanation

The previous verse ended 'flower-cuckoo'; this begins 'a cuckoo'. The verse shows four forms of the Mother in four places: a cuckoo in the Kadamba forest of Madurai, a peacock in the Himalaya, sunlight in the sky, and a swan on the lotus.

The cuckoo is a sweet voice; the peacock is beauty; the sun is light; the swan is purity, the wisdom that separates milk from water. The one Mother is all of these. Ending with 'heavy earrings' recalls the earring that became the moon at Thirukkadaiyur. As the book nears its close, Bhattar returns to that miracle.

The sthala purana of Mylapore (Kapaleeswarar temple)

The Goddess Who Worshipped as a Peahen at Mylapore

From the sthala purana of Mylapore. One day on Kailasa, Shiva was explaining to the Mother the meaning of the five-syllable mantra. Just then a peacock nearby spread its tail and danced, and for a moment its beauty drew the Mother's attention away. 'Be born as a peahen and worship me,' said the Lord.

The Mother came to earth as a peahen and worshipped a lingam beneath a punnai tree near the seashore. Every day she brought flowers and placed them on it. Pleased with her penance, the Lord appeared, gave her back her own form and took her to himself again. The place where the Mother worshipped as a peahen came to be called Mayilappur, Mylapore, 'the town of the peacock'. There the Mother is worshipped as Karpagambal.

The Mother appears as a peacock in the Himalaya and at Mylapore, and as a cuckoo in the Kadamba forest. This is a Tamil memory of the form Bhattar sings: 'she is a beautiful, great peacock'.

To reflect on

Today, notice the song or beauty of a bird, and remember the Mother in it.
