Shiva Purana, Rudra SamhitaKubera's Wealth and the Glance at Parvati
From the Shiva Purana. In an earlier birth Kubera was Gunanidhi, a poor brahmin. One Shivaratri night, almost by chance, he trimmed a temple lamp that was about to go out. As the fruit of that small service, in his next birth he did great penance and saw Shiva and Parvati appear before him.
They made him Kubera, lord of all the world's wealth. But seeing the Mother's great beauty, Kubera stared at her with envy, wondering how she came to have such beauty and grace. At that moment the sight of one of his eyes was lost.
When he bowed and asked forgiveness, the Mother forgave him, but that eye stayed yellow. The story reminds us that wealth is only a sign of grace, and that humility is owed to the one who gave it.
