Meaning

Shiva, with the shining crescent moon in His matted hair, is a mountain, and the Mother is the fragrant green creeper that clings to it and spreads over it. Those who set her firmly in their hearts, put away their troubles and stay so for even the blink of an eye: will they ever again enter this hut of a body, full of guts, fat and blood?

Explanation

Shiva is a mountain, and the Mother is the green creeper growing over it. The mountain is firm and still; the creeper is alive and growing. Their beauty is in being together.

Bhattar says that if one holds this vision in the heart even 'for the blink of an eye', there is no more rebirth. He describes the body harshly as 'a hut soaked in guts, fat and blood', not to despise it but to remind us there is a greater home than this.

Skanda Purana, Arunachala Mahatmya

Gauri's Penance at Arunachala

From the Arunachala Mahatmya. As atonement for covering Shiva's eyes at Kailasa, Parvati came down to earth to do penance. After worshipping at Kanchi, she went to Arunachala. There she stayed at the hermitage of the sage Gautama and did penance, treating the mountain itself as Shiva.

Mahishasura came to disturb her penance. The Mother became Durga and defeated him, then went around the mountain again and continued her penance.

In the month of Karthigai, on the full-moon day, Shiva appeared as a great light on the mountain's summit and took the Mother as the left half of His body. The Karthigai Deepam is lit in memory of this. Bhattar's picture of Shiva as a mountain and the Mother as the creeper that spreads over it comes alive in this story of Arunachala.
