Saundarya Lahari tradition, life of Adi ShankaraThe Saundarya Lahari Brought from Kailasa
From tradition. When Adi Shankara went to Kailasa and bowed to Shiva, tradition says the Lord gave him a palm-leaf manuscript of a hundred verses on the glory of the Mother.
As Shankara was leaving, Nandi, standing at the gate, snatched it from him. Only the first forty-one verses remained in Shankara's hands from the torn manuscript. These tell the secrets of Sri Vidya worship and are called the Ananda Lahari, the wave of bliss.
By the Mother's grace Shankara himself composed the rest, verses that describe her beauty from foot to crown; together they are the Saundarya Lahari, the wave of beauty. The two parts make one hundred. Like that book, which joins the light of wisdom with the delight of beauty, Bhattar praises the Mother as 'the true substance, the enjoyment, the clarity'.
