Meaning

Taking you as the Supreme, I have come to you. It would not be right to push me, a lonely one, away, saying 'He is not worthy to be among your devotees.' O you who shine as the left half of the Lord whose hand once bent the mountain as a bow to burn the cities of his enemies, and plucked off one of the heads of Brahma who sits on the lotus!

Explanation

The previous verse ended 'O Supreme' (paraaparaiye); this begins 'as the Supreme' (param). Bhattar voices a fear: 'Will I be pushed out of the company of your devotees as unworthy?'

He recalls two deeds of the Lord: burning the three cities and plucking off Brahma's proud head. Both destroyed arrogance. The inner sense is that he who destroys pride will not push away the humble. The Mother, the left half of that Lord, will accept even this lonely devotee.

Periya Puranam, the life of Thirunalaippovar (Nandanar)

Nandi Moves Aside for Nandanar

From Sekkizhar's Periya Puranam. In Adhanur lived a devotee named Nandanar. Because he was born into a community that society kept down, he was not allowed inside the temple. Still he served the Lord, giving leather for the temple drums and gut strings for the lutes.

Nandanar went to the temple at Thirupunkur and stood outside the gate, longing to see the Lord. But the great Nandi in front of the shrine blocked his view, and he wept. Then, at the Lord's command, the Nandi moved a little to one side, and Nandanar saw the Lord and rejoiced. Even today the Nandi at Thirupunkur sits shifted to one side. Later, at Thillai, he entered fire, rose in the form of a sage and merged with Nataraja.

The Lord did not push away the devotee whom the world had pushed away as unworthy. Nandanar is proof of the trust with which Bhattar pleads with the Mother: 'It would not be right to push me away, saying he is not worthy.'

To reflect on

Could you make way today for someone whom society has set aside?
