Mahabharata, Shanti Parva and Anushasana ParvaKrishna Stands Before Bhishma on His Bed of Arrows
From the Mahabharata. In the Kurukshetra war Bhishma was pierced by arrows and lay on a bed made of the arrows themselves. Having the boon of choosing the moment of his death, he waited for the sun's northward course, Uttarayana.
After the war, Krishna came to him with the Pandavas. Bhishma gave Yudhishthira long teachings on dharma, and it was then that he spoke the Vishnu Sahasranama. When Uttarayana came, Bhishma fixed his eyes on Krishna and sang his praise. Krishna stood before him, smiling. Gazing on the Lord's form, Bhishma peacefully gave up his life.
At the moment body and life parted, the Lord himself came and stood before him. This is the blessing Bhattar prays for: 'when the mind forgets, you must come before me.'
