Bhagavata Purana, Book 10Yogamaya Slips from Kamsa's Hands
From the Bhagavata Purana. On the night Krishna was born, Vasudeva carried him to Gokulam and brought back to Mathura the baby girl just born to Yashoda. That child was Yogamaya, a form of the Goddess.
Kamsa, who feared death from Devaki's eighth child, snatched the girl and tried to dash her against a rock. She slipped from his hands and rose into the sky. Shining as the Goddess with weapons in eight hands, she said, 'The one who will kill you has already been born elsewhere,' and vanished.
The Bhagavata says she is afterwards worshipped in many places under many names. The garland of names in this verse recalls this Mother, sister of Vishnu, who appears in many forms at once.
