Abirami Andhadhi 26 ·

Aeththum atiyavar, eeraezh ulakinaiyum pataiththum / Kaaththum azhiththum thiripavaraam, kamazhpoongkatampu / Saaththum kuzhal anangkae! manam naarum nin thaalinaikku en / Naath thangku punmozhi aeriyavaaru, nakaiyutaiththae.

Meaning

O Goddess whose hair is adorned with fragrant kadamba flowers! Those who praise you are the very gods who create, protect and destroy the fourteen worlds. That my humble words, born on my tongue, should also climb up to your fragrant feet: is that not something to smile at!

Explanation

In verse 13 Bhattar said creation, protection and dissolution are the Mother's acts. Here he says the three gods who do those acts are her devotees. When the very gods who rule the world praise her feet, he says humbly, it is amusing that his small words should be there too.

But in truth it is not amusing; it is the Mother's generosity. She receives the praise of the great and the stumbling words of the small with the same love, as a mother loves to hear her child's babble.

Life of the poet Kalamegam, Thiruvanaikaval tradition

How Kalamegam Became a Poet

From the tradition of Thiruvanaikaval. A young man named Varadan worked as a servant in the Thiruvanaikaval temple. He had little learning. One night he lay asleep in a hall of the temple.

That same night a seeker was meditating on Akilandeswari. The Mother came to him as a young woman with betel in her mouth, but he refused to accept it. The Mother then woke Varadan, who was sleeping nearby, and placed the betel in his mouth.

When Varadan awoke, poems poured from his tongue like rain from a black cloud, and so he was named Kalamegam, 'black rain cloud'. The Mother placed poetry on the tongue of an unlettered man. The words Bhattar humbly calls 'the poor words on my tongue' are a gift of the same grace.

Is there something you think you cannot do that you could try today, in a small way, with love?
