Meaning

Shiva, the red-hued warrior, took the golden mountain as his bow and brought down the three cities of the demons, and wrapped himself in the flayed skin of a fierce-eyed rutting elephant. His Lady left her mark all over his body with her embrace. The sugarcane bow and the flower arrows in her red, lotus-like hands are always in my mind.

Explanation

The previous verse ended 'dear sister'; this begins 'golden bow'. The first two lines recall two great deeds of Shiva: making the golden mountain his bow to burn the three cities, and flaying a terrible elephant and wearing its skin.

Yet the Mother won over even this mighty hero with a loving embrace. Bhattar's mind turns not to war or victory but to the sugarcane bow and flower arrows in her hand. These are her weapons, which win the mind and the senses through love.

Shiva Purana, Rudra Samhita (the slaying of Gajasura); Kashi tradition

Krittivasa, Who Wore the Elephant Demon's Skin

From the Shiva Purana. Gajasura, the son of Mahishasura, was a demon in the form of an elephant. Armed with a boon from Brahma, he tormented the three worlds. When he entered the city of Kashi and terrified the devotees there, Shiva rose against him.

In a fierce battle Shiva lifted him on his trident. At the moment of death Gajasura's heart changed. 'Lord, wear my skin as your garment, so that my memory may live on with your name,' he prayed. Shiva did so and wrapped himself in the skin. That is why he is called Krittivasa, 'he whose garment is a hide'. The Krittivaseshwara temple in Kashi recalls this.

The Mother lovingly embraced the Lord even in this fearsome form. Bhattar's wonder is that the Lord who could change even an enemy's heart was himself won over by the Mother's love.
