Meaning

She is my companion, the deity I worship and the mother who bore me. She is the branch, the tender shoot and the deep-set root of the Vedas. I have come to know that she is Tripurasundari, who holds in her hands the cool flower arrows, the sugarcane bow, the noose and the goad.

Explanation

This verse finds three relationships in one person: mother, deity and companion. If the Veda is a tree, she is its root, its branches and its new shoots. Its origin, its growth and its fresh light all come from her.

Tradition gives a meaning to each of the four emblems: the noose restrains desire and the goad restrains anger; the sugarcane bow is the mind and the five flower arrows are the five senses. The Mother holds the mind and the senses in her hands, and those who take refuge in her find their minds brought under her care.

Brahmanda Purana, Lalitopakhyana

Lalita Defeats Bhandasura

From the Lalitopakhyana. When Kama was burned to ashes by the fire of Shiva's third eye, a demon named Bhanda was born from those ashes. Through fierce penance he won boons and drained the worlds of their joy and vigour.

Lalita went against him with a great army of her powers. The flower arrows from her bow destroyed his forces, and at last she defeated Bhanda with the arrow called Kameshvarastra. Then, moved by the prayer of Rati, she brought Kama back to life.

A sugarcane bow and arrows of flowers are gentle weapons, yet with them the Mother overcame the most terrible of demons. This is the strength of love.

To reflect on

Today, whose hands held the bow of your mind and the arrows of your senses?
