Meaning

Will he, in his grace, give a few magizh flowers to this girl in her jewels? Is there any sorrow other than the darkness that gathers when dusk comes? He made a thousand verses, excellent in poetry, music and meaning, a creeper made lovely with ornaments of speech. Following their course, the clear heart tastes as sweet as sugar-cane.

Explanation

The first half of the verse is longing: will a single magizh flower come? The second half is comfort: the heart that follows his songs is sweet as sugar-cane.

The Alvar is not present in person, but his songs are here. To taste them is to be with him. Longing and sweetness together are the special taste of devotion.

Bhakti tradition (the life of Mirabai)

Mira, Who Wed Only Krishna

From the bhakti tradition. Mira, born into a royal family in Rajasthan, saw a wedding procession as a little girl and asked her mother, 'Who is my bridegroom?' Her mother, in play, showed her a small image of Krishna: 'He is your bridegroom.' From that day Mira thought of Krishna as her husband.

When she grew up she was married to a prince, but her heart stayed with Krishna. She sat with devotees, singing and dancing. The royal family scolded her, gave her poison, sent her a snake. Tradition says the poison turned to nectar and the snake to a garland of flowers.

Her songs are still sung all over India: 'My Giridhara Gopal alone is mine; there is no one else.' Tradition says that in the end she merged into Krishna's shrine at Dwaraka. Her life, in which the longing of separation and the sweetness of song were mingled, recalls the state of Kambar's heroine.
