Introduction

The rooster is Murugan's banner. It is the bird that announces the dawn, and driving away darkness is its nature. In the Seval Viruttam, Arunagirinathar sings of that rooster pecking at and chasing away the troubles of devotees, especially ghosts, evil spirits, sorcery and disease, then beating its wings and dancing. Every verse ends 'sevar thiru thuvajame', O holy banner bearing the rooster.

Devotees who are afraid still sing these verses as songs of protection. The six abodes of Murugan, the story of Sambandar curing the Pandya king's fever, and Murugan teaching Tamil to Agastya all appear here.

The text here is the sung version found in the Project Madurai e-text. Its raga notes appear in each verse's note, and the repeated refrains sung after each verse have been left out. Only clear typing slips have been corrected; the readings of these Sanskrit-rich verses vary from edition to edition.

From the Thirumurugatruppadai and temple tradition

The Dawn the Rooster Calls

The Thirumurugatruppadai of Nakkeerar begins by praising Murugan as the sun rising from the sea, 'the sun praised by many, rising on the right to gladden the world'. It is the rooster that announces that sun. In Murugan temples a rooster crowing before the dawn darshan is considered auspicious, and in many towns devotees release roosters at the temple in fulfilment of vows. The rooster is the sign of darkness giving way to light.
