The Praise of God

Katavul Vaazhththu

This chapter teaches that learning and living find their meaning only when joined to humility before the primal, pure wisdom that underlies everything. Valluvar shows that clarity of mind, evenness towards likes and dislikes, and mastery over the senses are what carry a person across the great sea of life.

Introduction

The Thirukkural is built in three parts: virtue, wealth and love. Virtue comes first, and its first section is the Prologue, or Paayiram. A prologue is the doorway of a book. In Tamil homes it is natural to pause at the threshold, bow, and only then step inside. Valluvar follows the same courtesy. Before he leads us into the great house of dharma, artha and kama, he builds four doorways: the praise of God, the glory of rain, the greatness of ascetics, and the insistence on virtue. This chapter is the first of the four.

Notice that Valluvar names no particular religion here. He calls the divine by many titles: the Primal Lord, the One of Pure Knowledge, the Sovereign, the Possessor of Eight Qualities, the Sage who is an ocean of virtue. Each title points to a quality rather than a sect, which is why people of many faiths have been able to recite these ten verses as their own prayer. For Valluvar, what matters is not the name given to the Supreme, but the character we are asked to revere: wisdom without blemish, freedom from craving and aversion, incomparable greatness, and boundless compassion.

The ten verses climb like a staircase. The first lays down the principle that everything has a beginning, using the letter A as its image. The second warns that education which never bows to pure wisdom bears no real fruit. Verses three to five describe what comes to those who walk this path: a life that endures, freedom from sorrow, and release from the tangle of good and bad deeds. The sixth speaks of mastering the five senses and living truthfully; the seventh of relief from anxiety. The eighth insists that wealth and pleasure, without virtue, cannot carry us across the sea of life. The ninth compares a head that never bows to a faculty that has stopped working. The tenth ends in hope: the great sea of births can be swum.

All this is surprisingly current. We live among highly educated people who are restless, and among successful people who have lost their humility. To say that I did not make the language I speak, the food I eat or the ground I walk on, and that something greater than me holds it all together, does not make a person small. It makes them grateful and calm. That quiet humility is the lesson this opening chapter offers, and everything that follows in the book rests on it.

Chapter story

The Churning of the Milky Ocean

From the Bhagavata Purana.

Once, under the curse of the sage Durvasa, the devas lost their strength and their prosperity. Seeing this, the asuras grew mighty and defeated the devas in battle. Not knowing what to do, the devas went with Brahma to Lord Vishnu, bowed to him and laid all their sorrow before him. Vishnu showed them a way: "Churn the Milky Ocean and nectar will rise from it. But churning that sea is more than you can do alone; you will need the asuras as well. So for the present, do not nurse your quarrel with them. Work together."

So the devas and asuras joined hands. They took Mount Mandara for the churning rod and the great serpent Vasuki for the rope, with the asuras pulling at one end and the devas at the other, and they began to churn. But the mountain had nothing to rest upon in the sea and slowly began to sink into the water. Just when everyone feared that all their labour would be lost, Vishnu took the form of a huge tortoise, went down to the ocean floor and bore the mountain on his back. Had he not held it up, nobody's work would have borne fruit.

As they churned, what came out first was not nectar but the terrible poison called Halahala. Its heat spread through the whole world, and devas, asuras and all living beings fled in terror. Even those who had boasted of their strength could think of no way to protect themselves. Everyone went to Lord Shiva and sought his refuge. Seeing the suffering of living beings, Shiva in his compassion took the poison and drank it. Tradition says that Goddess Uma held his throat so that the poison would not go down, and that his neck turned blue, which is why he is praised as Neelakanta, the blue-throated one.

After that the churning went on. Lakshmi, the divine cow Kamadhenu, the white elephant Airavata and many other wonders rose one after another. At last Dhanvantari appeared, holding the pot of nectar. When the asuras began to fight the devas for it, Vishnu took the enchanting form of Mohini and saw to it that the nectar reached the devas.

At every step of this story the same truth shows itself. The power of the devas did not save them. The one who bore the mountain and the one who swallowed the poison was the Lord himself. To make effort is our duty, but wisdom lies in knowing that behind every effort stands a grace that holds it up, and in bowing before it. This is the humility that Valluvar sings in the ten verses of his chapter on the praise of God.
