Aathichoodi 41 · கொள்ளை விரும்பேல்

Kollai virumpael

Meaning

Do not covet plunder.

Word by word

plunder, loot
do not desire

Explanation

Do not covet plunder. Wealth seized by force does not last; it brings enmity and ruin to the one who takes it.

Desire first arises in the mind. That is why Avvaiyar does not only say "do not plunder" but "do not even desire it", cutting at the very root.

Valmiki Ramayana, Uttara Kanda; Yuddha Kanda

The Pushpaka Chariot

From the Valmiki Ramayana, Uttara Kanda. Kubera, lord of wealth, had received by Brahma's grace a wondrous flying chariot called Pushpaka. He was also Ravana's elder brother, and lovingly sent a messenger with good counsel to his younger brother.

But Ravana, driven by greed for plunder, attacked Alakapuri, defeated Kubera and seized the Pushpaka. From then on his arrogance grew even greater.

At the end of the Yuddha Kanda, after Ravana fell, it was in that same Pushpaka that Rama returned to Ayodhya, and afterwards he sent it back to its owner, Kubera. Wealth that would not stay with the plunderer was returned to its rightful owner by one who walked the path of dharma.
