Valmiki Ramayana, Uttara KandaHanuman's Boon of Never Parting
From the Valmiki Ramayana, Uttara Kanda. After Ravana's fall, Rama was crowned in Ayodhya. The vanaras and others who had helped in the war received gifts and took their leave.
When Hanuman came to take leave, he asked for no riches. "Rama, may my love for you never change. As long as your story is told in the world, may I live to hear it."
Rama embraced him and granted the boon. That is why, even today, wherever the Ramayana is recited, it is the custom to keep a seat for Hanuman. Hanuman is the form of a love that never parts from the friendship it has joined.
