Koyil Puranam (Umapathi Sivacharya)The Dance Seen by Patanjali and Vyaghrapada
From the Koyil Puranam. Adisesha, the serpent on whom Vishnu rests, once saw Vishnu filled with joy and asked the reason. 'I was remembering Shiva's dance of bliss,' said Vishnu. Adisesha was seized with longing to see that dance himself. He was born on earth as the sage Patanjali and began a long penance.
In the forest of Thillai there already lived a sage named Vyaghrapada. He had asked Shiva for the feet of a tiger so that he could climb trees before dawn and pick flowers that no bee had touched, to offer to the Lord. The two sages worshipped together at Thillai and waited for the dance.
On the holy day of Thaipusam, Shiva danced the Ananda Tandava in the golden hall, with the goddess Sivakami watching. The two sages saw the whole universe moving to the rhythm of that dance. They prayed, 'Let this dance go on here for ever,' and the Lord agreed. That is why Thillai is called simply 'the Temple', and why the refrain of Natarajar Paththu bows to the Nataraja who dwells in Thillai.
