Introduction

The vel is the sign of Murugan's wisdom, the Shakti spear given by Mother Parvati. Each verse of the Vel Viruttam sings of the spear setting the worlds spinning, piercing Sura and the mountain and becoming the refuge of devotees, and ends on the word 'vele', O spear.

The six abodes of Murugan and Kataragama in Lanka are sung here. The verses are full of Puranic references: the spear that received Nakkeerar's song, the spear that imprisoned Brahma and freed Indra.

The text here is the sung version found in the Project Madurai e-text. Its raga notes appear in each verse's note, and the repeated refrains sung after each verse have been left out. Only clear typing slips have been corrected; the readings of these Sanskrit-rich verses vary from edition to edition.

From the tradition of Sikkal

Receiving the Spear at Sikkal

Temple tradition says that before setting out to fight Sura, Murugan received the Shakti spear from the Mother, Velnedunkanni, at Sikkal. Even today, on the fifth day of Kanda Sashti, the 'receiving the spear' festival is held at Sikkal. Devotees believe that at the moment he receives the spear from his Mother, beads of sweat appear on Murugan's image. The next day comes the Soorasamharam at Tiruchendur. The Mother's grace becomes the spear and stands by us as our support.
