Meaning

However many the worlds, even a crore of them, however many the great mountains, if they stand in its way it pierces right through and out the other side; it does not know how to stop. It struck Sura's body to pieces, a fierce slaying that made even Yama, god of death, tremble. It is the tall, mighty spear that shines as if its point had been ground on Meru, the golden mountain. O victorious spear in the sacred hand of Guha, nephew of Mukunda: of Vishnu the wondrous one, who bears mace, bow, discus, conch and sword and destroys the asuras, who sleeps with honey-flower eyes upon the golden hoods of the fire-eyed, great serpent, while Lakshmi of the lotus and Bhudevi, whose garment is the sea, gently press his feet.

Explanation

The first half tells of the spear's unstoppable force: it passes through and does not halt, and even Yama is afraid. The second half paints the stillness of Vishnu: holding his five weapons, resting in yogic sleep on Adishesha while Lakshmi and Bhudevi press his feet. Fierce valour and deep calm meet in one family, for Murugan is that Vishnu's nephew, the son of his sister Parvati in Tamil devotion.

Bhagavata tradition, the story of Bhrigu

Bhrigu's Test

From the Bhagavata tradition. The sages sent Bhrigu to test which of the three great gods was the most patient. Bhrigu found Vishnu resting on the milk ocean while Lakshmi pressed his feet, and he kicked Vishnu in the chest. Vishnu did not grow angry. He rose, took the sage's foot in his hands and asked gently, 'Did your foot not hurt?' Seeing this patience, the sages praised him as the height of goodness.

To reflect on

Can you recall a time you had the power to strike back and chose patience instead?
