கொடிய நஞ்சுண்ட கண்டனான சிவனின் சூலமும், திருமாலின் வெற்றிச் சக்கரமும், இந்திரனின் வஜ்ராயுதமும் சூரனின் குலத்தை வெல்ல முடியாது என்று கருதி, 'போரில் நீ வென்று அருள்வாய்' என்று தேவர்களும் நான்முகனும் நின்று இரக்க, மலையோடு சூரனின் உடலையும் ஒரு நொடியில் ஊடுருவித் தனி வீரம் கொண்ட நீண்ட வேல். கங்காளி, சாமுண்டி, வாராகி, இந்திராணி, கௌமாரி, கமலாசனி, நாரணி, குமரி, திரிபுரை, பைரவி, அமலை, கௌரி, காமாட்சி, சைவி, சிங்காரி, யாமளை, பவானி, கார்த்திகை, கொற்றவை, திரியம்பகி எனப் போற்றப்படும் அன்னை அளித்த செல்வச் சிறுவனான, அரக்கர் குலத்தை அழித்த ஆறுமுக முருகனின் செம்பொன் திருக்கை வேலே!

சிவனின் சூலமோ திருமாலின் சக்கரமோ செய்ய முடியாததை வேல் செய்தது. ஏனெனில் வேல் அன்னையின் சக்தி; அது ஞானம். ஞானத்தால் மட்டுமே வெல்லக்கூடிய பகைகள் உண்டு.
The spear did what neither Shiva's trident nor Vishnu's discus could. For the spear is the Mother's power; it is wisdom. Some enemies can be conquered only by wisdom.
மகிஷாசுரன் தேவர்களை வென்று விண்ணுலகைப் பிடித்தான். எந்தத் தேவனாலும் அவனை வெல்ல முடியவில்லை. அப்போது மும்மூர்த்திகளும் தேவர்களும் சினந்ததால் அவர்கள் உடலிலிருந்து ஒளி வெளிப்பட்டு ஒன்றாகி, துர்க்கை அன்னையாகத் தோன்றியது. ஒவ்வொரு தேவனும் தன் ஆயுதத்தை அவளுக்கு அளித்தான். அன்னை சிங்கத்தின் மேல் ஏறி மகிஷனை வென்றாள். தனித்தனியே முடியாதது, ஒன்றுபட்ட சக்தியால் முடிந்தது.
Mahishasura defeated the gods and seized heaven. No god could overcome him. Then, as the Trimurti and the gods grew angry, light poured from their bodies and merged into one, appearing as the Mother Durga. Each god gave her his weapon. Riding a lion, the Mother defeated Mahisha. What none could do alone was done by united power.
