Introduction

Arunagirinathar sang three short works on Murugan's spear, peacock and rooster, and this one is for the peacock. Each verse shows the worlds shaking as the peacock dances and its plumes covering the sky, and ends in praise of Murugan who rides it. Every verse closes on the word 'mayile', O peacock, or 'mayilaam'.

These are santha viruttams, verses full of rhythm and rich in Sanskrit words. They are still sung in temples and bhajans to set ragas and talas. The last verse tells the fruit gained by those who read the Vel Viruttam and the Mayil Viruttam.

The 'Thiruporur Mayil Viruttam' of Chidambara Swamigal is a separate book on this site; this work is different from it.

The text here is the sung version found in the Project Madurai e-text. Its raga notes appear in each verse's note, and the repeated refrains sung after each verse have been left out. Only clear typing slips have been corrected; the readings of these Sanskrit-rich verses vary from edition to edition.

From the Kanda Puranam

How an Enemy Became a Mount

In the final battle Surapadman stood in the middle of the sea as a vast mango tree. Murugan's spear split the tree in two. Then Sura's heart changed and he begged, 'Give me a place beside you.' Murugan made one half a peacock to be his mount and the other half a rooster to be his banner. The one who came to destroy was blessed to carry the Lord. So to praise the peacock is also to praise a soul transformed by grace.
