ஊழிக்காலம் வந்ததோ என்று திருமாலும் பிரமனும் அஞ்ச, எல்லா உலகங்களும் நடுங்க, சந்திரனும் சூரியனும் ஒளிய, இந்திரன் முதலிய தேவர்கள் கலங்க, உமையுடன் சிவன் தனி நடனம் ஆடியபோது, இருள் புரளும் நீண்ட வானத்தின் உச்சி முழுதும் மூடும்படி விரியும் பச்சைத் தோகைக் கற்றையுடைய மயில் இது. தெய்வயானையின் தூய கணவனும், திருத்தணி மலையானும், கங்கை சூடிய சிவனின் இசை வடிவான அருளாளனுமான கார்த்திகேயன் செலுத்த, அசுரர் மடியக் கிரௌஞ்ச மலை கிழியும்படி நடக்கும் மயிலே!

பிரளயத்தில் சிவன் ஆடும்போது எல்லாம் இருளும். அந்த இருளில் வானை மூடும் பச்சைத் தோகை: அழிவின் நடுவிலும் அருளின் அடையாளம். அழிவும் புதுப்பிறப்பும் ஒரே நடனத்தின் இரு பகுதிகள்.
When Shiva dances at dissolution everything grows dark. In that darkness, green plumes cover the sky: a sign of grace even in the midst of destruction. Destruction and renewal are two parts of one dance.
திருவாலங்காட்டில் காளிக்கும் சிவனுக்கும் நடனப் போட்டி நடந்தது. இருவரும் சமமாக ஆடினர். இறுதியில் சிவன் தன் காலை நேராக வானை நோக்கி உயர்த்தி ஊர்த்துவ தாண்டவம் ஆடினார். நாணம் கொண்ட காளி அதைச் செய்யாமல் தோல்வியை ஒப்புக்கொண்டாள். அந்த நடனத்தில் வானமே அதிர்ந்தது என்கிறது மரபு. அந்த நடனத்தின் மகனின் மயிலும் வானை மூடுகிறது.
At Thiruvalangadu, Kali and Shiva held a dance contest. They danced as equals. At last Shiva raised his leg straight up toward the sky in the Urdhva Tandava. Out of modesty Kali would not do the same and accepted defeat. Tradition says the sky itself shook at that dance. The peacock of that Dancer's son covers the sky too.
