Meaning

He is the radiant, boon-giving Supreme, beyond and above, free of care and flaw; the joyful-hearted one who walks not the path without dharma but the path of dharma; who dwells at Thanigai, shaded by kura trees and praised by the immortals. This is the plumed peacock that roams with delight through all things moving and unmoving. O peacock driven by the six-faced Lord: praised as 'Kumara of the destroyer of the cities, Guru supreme', nephew of Vishnu, bearer of the sharp spear that is the refuge of Indra whom Indrani salutes, light of the hunter clan, who wages war as play, destroyer of the fierce asuras!

Explanation

This verse's beauty lies in its sound: 'nirajatha virajatha... kulachala characharamelaam inithulaaviya kulaaviya kalaapa mayilaam'. The peacock roams through all things: a poetic form of the Lord's presence everywhere. (The readings of this verse vary across editions.)

From the Thiruppugazh tradition

The god of rhythm

Arunagirinathar's Thiruppugazh songs are composed to rhythmic patterns like 'thanathana thanathana'; each has its own beat. He sang in thousands of different rhythms. Later, Vallimalai Sachidananda Swamigal recovered those rhythms and spread the musical worship of Thiruppugazh again. It is a tradition in which sound itself becomes worship.
