Those who read the ten flawless verses of the Vel Viruttam and the ten flawless verses of the Mayil Viruttam, most sweet and beautiful songs sung by Arunagirinathar, who for many days has praised the peacock, our lord, ridden by our Lord of Thiruthani, where a blue lily blooms every day in a spring, the Lord of the gods: they will gain the station of the four-faced Brahma who recites the Vedas, ride the swan and be embraced by Sarasvati; gain the station of the sea-hued Vishnu, ride Garuda and live with Lakshmi; gain Indra's station, the elephant Airavata and the nectar of the gods; they will see a thousand full moons, win honour and fame, and receive the deathless boon.
பெருமைமிகு பதவிகள் சொல்லப்பட்டாலும், இறுதியில் வருவது 'அழியா வரம்'. எல்லாப் பதவிகளும் நிலையற்றவை; நிலைத்தது முருகனின் அருள் ஒன்றே என்பதே உட்கருத்து. 'ஆயிரம் பிறை காண்பது' எண்பது ஆண்டுக்கு மேல் வாழ்தலைக் குறிக்கும் தமிழ் மரபு.
Though grand stations are listed, the last is 'the deathless boon'. All stations pass; only Murugan's grace endures: that is the inner meaning. 'Seeing a thousand moons' is a Tamil way of speaking of living past eighty.
ஒருவர் ஆயிரம் பிறைகளைக் கண்டால், அதாவது ஏறக்குறைய எண்பது ஆண்டுகள் வாழ்ந்தால், அவர் குடும்பம் 'சதாபிஷேகம்' என்ற விழாவைக் கொண்டாடுகிறது. முதிய தம்பதியருக்கு மீண்டும் திருமணம் செய்வதுபோல் சடங்குகள் நடக்கின்றன; பிள்ளைகளும் பேரக்குழந்தைகளும் ஆசி பெறுகின்றனர். நீண்ட வாழ்வு இறையருளின் கொடையாகப் போற்றப்படுகிறது; அதைப் பகிர்ந்து கொள்வதே அந்த விழா.
When a person has seen a thousand moons, that is, lived about eighty years, the family celebrates the Sathabhishekam. Rites are performed as though the elderly couple were marrying again, and children and grandchildren receive their blessings. A long life is honoured as a gift of grace, and the festival is its sharing.
