Explanation

In Tamil tradition, worship begins at the Lord's feet. Avvaiyar begins the same way: cool lotus feet anointed with sandal paste, and anklets ringing on them. Sight and sound come together, and in the very first line the devotee's mind has already drawn close to Ganesha.

Elders explain the treasure-chest belly as the great belly that holds the whole universe within it, which is why He is called Lambodara, the one with the vast belly. The great tusk stands for strength, the elephant face for wisdom, and the vermilion on His brow for auspiciousness.

Describing the form in such detail is a way into meditation. Close your eyes and picture Him part by part, from the feet to the crown, and the mind settles in one place. This meditation on the form is the first step of the inward yogic journey that the later part of the Agaval describes.

Shiva Purana, Rudra Samhita

The Child Parvati Made

From the Shiva Purana. One day, before going to bathe, Goddess Parvati took the turmeric and sandal paste from her own body and shaped from it a beautiful boy. She gave him life and set him at the door as guard, saying, 'Let no one in.'

Just then Shiva arrived. The boy stopped Him. Because the child would not break his mother's word, a battle broke out between him and Shiva's attendants, the ganas. None of them could overcome him. At last Shiva's trident struck off the boy's head.

Parvati was overcome with grief. To console her, Shiva told His ganas to bring the head of the first creature they found facing north. They returned with the head of an elephant. Shiva set it on the boy's body and gave him life again. He blessed him: 'Whatever task anyone begins, they shall worship him first.' And He made him lord of all His ganas: Ganapati.

The Agaval's very first words are 'cool sandal paste'. They recall that Ganesha's own body was born from the fragrant paste on his mother's skin.

To reflect on

Before you begin any task today, pause for one moment and gather your mind. That pause is the Pillaiyar Suzhi, the mark of Ganesha at the start of every work.
