Skanda Purana, Kaveri MahatmyaThe Crow Who Set the Kaveri Free
From the Kaveri Mahatmya. Once a terrible drought struck the southern land. Rivers dried up and fields withered. The sage Agastya held the whole river Kaveri inside his water-pot. He sat on the Kodagu hills, deep in meditation.
Seeing the people's suffering, Indra and the gods prayed to Ganesha. Ganesha took the form of a crow, flew there and perched on the rim of Agastya's water-pot. Agastya opened his eyes and tried to shoo the crow away. At that very moment the crow tipped over the pot and flew off. The Kaveri, held captive inside, burst out and began to flow.
Angry, Agastya chased the crow. The crow turned into a small boy and ran. Agastya caught him and raised his hand to rap him on the head, and then the boy revealed His true form as Ganesha. Agastya rapped his own head for his mistake and bowed down to Him. Tradition says that is why, even today, we tap our temples before Ganesha.
Just as He freed the river that was held captive, it is Ganesha who frees the soul held captive within, from the bonds of karma.
