Nalvazhi

Nalvazhi means 'the good path'. In forty venba verses Avvaiyar speaks of giving, destiny, honest work, the impermanence of life, devotion and wisdom, with a sharp eye for how the world really works.

Introduction

The book's invocation, "Paalum thelitheanum", is recited daily in Tamil homes as a prayer to Vinayaka. Offering four sweet things, Avvaiyar asks in return for the three Tamils: poetry, music and drama.

It opens by summing up every faith as "avoid evil and do good" and boldly declares that the givers are the truly high. With wit and sharpness it sings of the tyranny of hunger, the fleeting nature of wealth, the power of destiny and the dignity of farming.

The later verses rise toward spiritual wisdom: no danger comes to those who meditate on "Sivaya nama", and those beyond the pairs of opposites are free of fate. It closes by declaring that the Kural, the Upanishads, the Thevaram, the Thiruvasagam and the Thirumandiram all teach one truth.

From the Puranas (the tradition of Thirukkadavur)

Markandeya and Yama

From the Puranas. The sage Mrikandu and his wife prayed to Shiva for a child. Shiva offered them a choice: a long-lived son without wisdom, or a son of wisdom and devotion who would live only sixteen years. They chose the second, and so Markandeya was born.

From childhood Markandeya was absorbed in devotion to Shiva. As his sixteenth year drew near, he was worshipping the Shiva linga at Thirukkadavur when Yama, the lord of death, came with his noose to take his life.

Unafraid, Markandeya clasped the linga tightly. Yama's noose fell around both the boy and the linga. At once Shiva burst forth from the linga, kicked Yama down and subdued him. Markandeya was granted the boon of remaining sixteen forever, and Shiva is worshipped there as Kalasamharamurti, the conqueror of Time.

The story is the finest illustration of Nalvazhi's fifteenth verse: for those who keep "Sivaya nama" in their thoughts, there is never any danger.

The verses

Pure gem with the noble elephant face, I will offer you milk, clear honey, jaggery syrup and lentils, all four mixed together; grant me in return the three Tamils of the Sangam: poetry, music and drama.
Merit brings gain and sin brings loss; the deeds of days gone by are the wealth laid up for all who are born on earth. Think it over: what every faith teaches is simply this, avoid evil and do good.
Judged by the rule of justice, there are only two castes in the world: those who give are the great, and those who do not are the low. That is how things truly stand.
This body brings sorrow upon sorrow; do not take the passing for the permanent. Give what you have, and give quickly, for fate can bring grave illness; liberation welcomes those who have let go.
No one can bring a task to completion by planning alone; it succeeds when merit ripens. Like a mango that falls to a stick thrown by a blind man, things happen when their time comes.
What is not ours will not come though we plead for it; what is ours will not leave though we send it away. Yet people pine with wounded hearts over distant things, as if fretting were their trade.
Beyond what is destined, no one can take happiness from another in this world. Even if you sail the flooding sea and come back ashore, what more does it give to the life that dwells in this body?
Look at it any way you like, this body is a mean hut full of worms and disease. The good know this, and live detached like water on a lotus leaf, without idle talk.
Efforts to amass wealth may be beyond counting, yet wealth gathers only as fate allows. Hear me, people of the world: riches do not stay.
Even when the river runs dry and the sand burns the feet, it still feeds the world from its springs. So too those born in good families, though they fall into poverty, will never say "no" to one who asks.
Though you weep and roll on the ground year after year, will the dead return? People of the world, enough! The same road awaits us. Until we go, set worry aside: give, eat and live.
O my stomach! Tell you to skip a day's meal and you will not; tell you to take two days' food at once and you will not; you never once know my troubles. It is hard to live with you.
The tree on the riverbank and a life of high favour at court will both fall one day. Nothing equals living by the plough; every other calling has its flaws.
Who can ruin those destined to rise? Who can save those destined to die? Who can keep from begging those fated to beg? That is the truth of this world.
Worse than begging is living by flattery and nagging. Fie! Rather than lose honour to fill the belly, it is far better to give up life.
For those who keep "Sivaya nama" in their thoughts there is never any danger. This is the way and this is wisdom; everything else simply follows fate.
Water is good by the land it flows through, the worthy by their giving, the eyes by unfailing compassion, and a woman by her unbroken faithfulness; know these as the marvels of the sea-girt world.
With your own wrongs still standing, will blaming God bring you riches? For one who never gave, though knowing that giving removes sin, will an empty pot boil over today?
The world does not ask whether you are parent, sibling, countryman or kin: give, and people give back; give nothing, and they give nothing, though you fall at their feet.
Serving, begging, crossing the clear sea, play-acting, ruling the land, singing: we drive this wretched body through all of it, for the cruelty of the belly, for one measure of rice.
Trusting the favours of courtesans is like crossing a river with a grinding stone for a float. It is good neither for this life nor the next; it squanders great wealth and sows the seed of poverty.
Water, shade, land, stores of paddy, name, fame, a full life, a village, wealth and long years: Lakshmi, seated on the red lotus, always grants these to those without guile.
Listen, you wretched people who toil to amass money and then bury it: once the soul has left its nest, who will enjoy that money, you sinners?
In the house of one who gave false witness in the assembly, ghouls gather, white erukku blooms, creepers spread, Moodevi (misfortune) makes her home, and serpents move in.
A forehead without holy ash is bare, food without ghee is poor, a town without a river has no beauty, a life without siblings is lonely, and a house without a wife is empty.
If spending exceeds income, honour is lost and judgement fails; wherever one goes one is taken for a thief, is bad for seven births, and is evil even in the eyes of the good.
Honour, lineage, learning, generosity, wisdom, charity, austerity, rank, diligence, and love for one whose words are sweet as honey: all ten fly away when hunger comes.
Think of one thing and it may fail while another comes about; or what you thought of may come; or something never imagined may appear before you. All this is the work of the Lord who rules me.
We eat one measure of rice and wear four cubits of cloth, yet our thoughts run to eighty crore things. The household life of blinded people is as fragile as a clay pot, full of anxiety until death.
When a tree is laden with fruit, no one has to call the bats; they come. Give without holding back, as the cow lets down milk for her calf, and the whole world becomes your kin.
Each person reaps the deeds they did before, as Brahma, seated on the lotus, has written. O king, what use is blaming those who punish? Even if the whole town turns against it, will fate go away?
A pleasing tune is better than a flawed verse; good conduct is better than high birth; a lingering illness is better than faltering courage; and living alone is better than a spouse who fears no disgrace.
Like the mounds and hollows of a riverbed, wealth sinks and rises. People of the world, take as your support the dharma of giving food and pouring water, and your inner worth will rise high.
The hard cannot overcome the soft: the arrow that pierces an elephant cannot pierce cotton, and the rock that will not crack for an iron crowbar splits open for the root of a green tree.
Even an unlearned man, if he has money in hand, is met and welcomed by all; the man without it is wanted neither by his wife nor by the mother who bore him, and his word carries nowhere.
Some trees bear fruit without flowering, and some people understand without being told; but as a dead seed will not sprout however it is sown, a fool gains no understanding however much he is told.
The crab, the oyster, the bamboo and the plantain bring forth their young when they are about to perish. So too, when a man's wisdom, wealth and learning are about to perish, his mind falls into infatuation.
No book, not even the Vedas, gives a way to defeat the fruit of one's deeds. Beyond what comes before your eyes, do not worry, my heart; for those who reach the heights of heaven, there is no fate.
Those who are not caught in "good" and "bad", "I" and "he", "no" and "yes", but abide in the true state, have cut their bonds; the things people run after for the body's sake are vain.
If by the age of thirty one has not removed the three faults and realised within the one supreme reality, then one's learning withers with age, like a woman's youthful beauty.
Know that the Kural of the divine poet, the Upanishads that crown the four Vedas, the Thevaram of the three saints, the words of the sages, the Thirukkovaiyar, the Thiruvasagam and the words of Thirumoolar all speak one truth.
