Mahabharata, Vana ParvaBhima and the Old Monkey
From the Mahabharata, Vana Parva. During the exile, Bhima strode up a mountain path to fetch the Saugandhika flowers Draupadi had asked for. Proud of his strength, he went roaring and breaking trees as he walked.
On the way, an old monkey lay across the path with its tail stretched out. 'Make way!' Bhima ordered. The monkey replied calmly, 'I am old and cannot get up. Move my tail aside yourself and go on.'
With contempt, Bhima tried to lift the tail with one hand. It did not move. He tried with both hands and all his strength; sweating and straining, he still could not shift it. Ashamed, he bowed his head and asked humbly, 'Who are you?'
The monkey revealed himself as Hanuman, Bhima's own brother, both being sons of the Wind god. Hanuman embraced him lovingly, counselled him, showed him the way and promised to be with him in the war. Quiet humility had overcome roaring strength.
