Explanation

In a riverbed, the flood builds a mound in one place and scours a hollow in another. In the next flood, the mound may become a hollow and the hollow a mound. Wealth too rises and sinks like that, says Avvaiyar.

Rather than trusting wealth that does not stay, live with the support of dharma: give rice and pour water. That, she says, will make your inner worth rise high.

Rice and water are the simplest gifts. Giving them needs no great wealth, yet they are what keep life going. In the Tamil tradition, setting up water booths for travellers and running free kitchens were honoured as great acts of dharma.

Periya Puranam, life of Appudi Adigal

Appudi Adigal's Water Booths

From the Periya Puranam. Appudi Adigal of Thingalur was deeply devoted to Thirunavukkarasar, known as Appar, though he had never met him. He set up many water booths and free kitchens for travellers and named every one of them 'Thirunavukkarasu'. He gave his children the same name.

One day Appar passed that way. Surprised to see a water booth bearing his own name, he went looking for the man who had set it up and came to Appudi's house. Overjoyed that his guru himself had arrived, Appudi prepared a feast.

His eldest son, also named Thirunavukkarasu, went to fetch a plantain leaf and was bitten by a snake, and died. So that the feast would not be disturbed, the parents hid it. When Appar learned the truth, he had the boy's body brought to the temple and sang a hymn, and the boy rose up alive.

The heart of a simple devotee who lived by giving rice and pouring water was raised to a height the world honours; he is counted among the sixty-three Nayanmars.
