Meaning

Some trees bear fruit without flowering, and some people understand without being told; but as a dead seed will not sprout however it is sown, a fool gains no understanding however much he is told.

Word by word

some trees bear fruit without flowering
among people too
there are those who understand without being told
however you scatter and sow it
like a seed that will not sprout
though you explain to a fool
understanding does not arise

Explanation

Some trees, like the fig, bear fruit without visible flowers. Among people too, there are those who understand without being told. But as a dead seed will not sprout however it is scattered and sown, says Avvaiyar, no understanding arises in a fool however much you explain.

There are two lessons here. First, we should grow the habit of sensing what is needed without being told. Second, we should not waste our strength repeating advice to those who have no wish to listen.

But 'fool' here does not mean someone born without intelligence; it means the arrogance that refuses to listen. Break that shell, and even that seed may sprout.

Valmiki Ramayana, Yuddha Kanda

Ravana Rejects Vibhishana's Counsel

From the Valmiki Ramayana, Yuddha Kanda. After Hanuman had burned Lanka and gone, Rama's army arrived on the seashore. Ravana called his ministers for counsel, and many flattered him and urged him to war.

Only his brother Vibhishana bravely spoke the truth: 'Brother, carrying off Sita was not right. Evil omens are appearing in Lanka. Give Sita back to Rama, and our race will survive.' He said it again and again, in many ways, with love.

Ravana would not listen. In anger he insulted him: 'You are a disgrace to our family.' Vibhishana rose into the sky with four companions, crossed the sea and sought refuge with Rama. Rama accepted him and crowned him king of Lanka.

Vibhishana sowed good seed many times, but it would not sprout in soil hardened by arrogance. That refusal became the road to Ravana's destruction.
