Srimad Bhagavatam, Fourth CantoDaksha's Sacrifice
From the Srimad Bhagavatam, Fourth Canto. The Prajapati Daksha grew angry that his son-in-law, Lord Shiva, did not rise to honour him, and insulted Shiva in the assembly. Later he held a great sacrifice, invited all the gods, and left out only Shiva.
Sati, Daksha's daughter and Shiva's consort, went to her father's sacrifice uninvited. Unable to bear the insults to her husband, she gave up her body in the fire of yoga.
Hearing the news, Shiva in his wrath brought forth Virabhadra from his matted locks. Virabhadra destroyed the sacrifice and struck Daksha down. Later, at the gods' pleading, Shiva in his compassion restored Daksha to life with a goat's head. The one who scorned the divine lost his own head.
