Adhyatma Ramayana, Ayodhya KandaFrom Highway Robber to Valmiki
From the Adhyatma Ramayana, the story the sage Valmiki himself told Rama. In his youth he lived among hunters, supporting his family by robbing travellers on the road.
One day seven sages came that way. When he tried to rob them, they calmly asked, "Will your family share in the sin you commit? Go and ask them." He went home and asked. They said, "We share in what you bring home, but not in your sin."
Heartbroken, he fell at the sages' feet. They taught him to chant Rama's name reversed, "mara, mara". As he sat unmoving in penance, an anthill (valmika) grew over him. The one who rose from it was the sage Valmiki. The man who cast off evil deeds became the first poet.
