Meaning

The hard cannot overcome the soft: the arrow that pierces an elephant cannot pierce cotton, and the rock that will not crack for an iron crowbar splits open for the root of a green tree.

Explanation

Hard things cannot overcome soft things, says Avvaiyar, with two lovely examples. The arrow that passes clean through an elephant will not pierce a bale of cotton. The rock that will not crack for a long iron crowbar splits open for the tender root of a green tree.

This is a great lesson for life. Anger, harsh words and force only breed resistance. Patience, kind words and love melt even a heart of stone, slowly but surely.

The image of the root is worth noticing. A root does not split a rock in a day; it splits it by growing steadily for years. The strength of gentleness lies in its patience.

Mahabharata, Vana Parva

Bhima and the Old Monkey

From the Mahabharata, Vana Parva. During the exile, Bhima strode up a mountain path to fetch the Saugandhika flowers Draupadi had asked for. Proud of his strength, he went roaring and breaking trees as he walked.

On the way, an old monkey lay across the path with its tail stretched out. 'Make way!' Bhima ordered. The monkey replied calmly, 'I am old and cannot get up. Move my tail aside yourself and go on.'

With contempt, Bhima tried to lift the tail with one hand. It did not move. He tried with both hands and all his strength; sweating and straining, he still could not shift it. Ashamed, he bowed his head and asked humbly, 'Who are you?'

The monkey revealed himself as Hanuman, Bhima's own brother, both being sons of the Wind god. Hanuman embraced him lovingly, counselled him, showed him the way and promised to be with him in the war. Quiet humility had overcome roaring strength.
