Meaning

Even an unlearned man, if he has money in hand, is met and welcomed by all; the man without it is wanted neither by his wife nor by the mother who bore him, and his word carries nowhere.

Explanation

Even an unlearned man, if he has money in hand, is welcomed by everyone who rushes out to meet him. The man without means is wanted neither by his wife nor by the mother who bore him, and his word counts for nothing anywhere, says Avvaiyar.

This is a bitter truth about the way of the world. Avvaiyar is not praising it; she is warning that this is how the world is. She shows both why we must work and earn, and how shallow a world is that measures people by money.

Our part is twofold. We should work and earn our living. And we should grow in ourselves the habit of honouring the word of the poor. We need not repeat the world's mistake.

Periya Puranam, life of Ilayankudi Maranar

The Guest Who Came on a Rainy Night

From the Periya Puranam. Maranar of Ilayankudi was a prosperous farmer whose life was devoted to lovingly feeding the Shiva devotees who came to his door. To show the world his devotion, the Lord let poverty come upon him. His wealth went, but his hospitality did not stop.

One night there was heavy rain, and not a handful of rice in the house. Then a devotee of Shiva knocked at the door. Maranar was not shaken. On his wife's suggestion, he went out in the dark and, groping in the floodwater, gathered up the paddy seed he had sown in the field that very day.

With no firewood, he broke the rafters of his own roof to light the stove. His wife pounded the paddy and cooked rice, and made a dish from greens picked in the garden. When the meal was ready and they went to call the guest, Shiva and Uma appeared before them in radiant form and blessed them.

The world goes out to welcome the rich. But the Lord came looking for a poor man's door.
