Katha UpanishadNachiketa at the House of Death
From the Katha Upanishad. A brahmin named Vajashravas, claiming to give away all his wealth at a sacrifice, gave away old cows that no longer gave milk. His young son Nachiketa was troubled to see it and asked three times, 'Father, to whom will you give me?' The angry father replied, 'I give you to Death!'
To keep his father's word, Nachiketa went to the abode of Yama, the lord of death. Yama was away, and the boy waited three days without food. On his return, Yama offered him three boons for having kept a guest waiting.
For the third boon Nachiketa asked: 'When a person dies, some say he exists and some say he does not. Tell me the truth.' To test him, Yama offered long life, vast wealth, kingdoms and every pleasure instead. Nachiketa firmly refused: 'All these wear away by tomorrow. I want only that truth.'
Pleased, Yama taught him the knowledge of the Self. A boy, in his youth, chose the one reality over all the pleasures of the world.
