Explanation

Those who are not caught in pairs such as good and bad, I and he, no and yes, and who abide in the true state, have cut their bonds. To them, says Avvaiyar, the things people run after for the body's sake mean nothing.

Our minds always split things in two: what I like and what I don't, what is mine and what is his. These divisions give rise to attraction and aversion, and from them comes suffering.

The Bhagavad Gita too praises one who has gone beyond the pairs of opposites (4.22). This is not running away from the world, but living in it with a heart that its opposites cannot shake.

Srimad Bhagavatam, Book 5

Jada Bharata and King Rahugana

From the Srimad Bhagavatam, Book 5. Rahugana, king of Sindhu and Sauvira, was travelling by palanquin to the sage Kapila to seek wisdom. One bearer was short, so his men seized a sturdy brahmin they found on the road to carry it. He was Jada Bharata, a great sage who seemed to the world a simpleton.

Jada Bharata stepped carefully so as not to tread on even an ant, and the palanquin jolted. The king rebuked him with mockery and anger: 'Are you tired? With that stout body, can't you even carry properly? I will punish you!'

Jada Bharata answered calmly: 'Tiredness and stoutness belong to the body, and I am not the body. Bearer and borne, king and servant are all names for bodies. Neither punishment nor praise touches me.'

Hearing those words, the king climbed down at once, fell at his feet, begged forgiveness and received wisdom from him. No insult could move one who had gone beyond the pairs of I and he, high and low.
