Meaning

What is not ours will not come though we plead for it; what is ours will not leave though we send it away. Yet people pine with wounded hearts over distant things, as if fretting were their trade.

Explanation

What is not ours will not come, however much we plead. What is ours will not leave, even if we tell it to go. People who do not see this pine for things beyond their reach until their hearts are raw. Avvaiyar says, with some irony, that this has become their trade.

The word 'trade' is sharp. Pining eats up time and strength like a job, but it pays no wage.

This does not mean all desire is wrong. What is needed is balance: work honestly, accept what comes and let go of what does not. Reaching for what belongs to others brings only trouble.

Srimad Bhagavatam, Book 10

The Syamantaka Jewel

From the Srimad Bhagavatam, Book 10. Satrajit received the Syamantaka jewel from the Sun god, and it gave gold every day. Krishna asked him to give it to Ugrasena, the king; Satrajit refused.

His brother Prasena wore the jewel and went hunting. A lion killed him and took the jewel. Jambavan then killed the lion and carried the jewel to his cave. The blame fell on Krishna: people said he had killed Prasena for it.

Krishna searched the forest and fought Jambavan for twenty-eight days. At last Jambavan recognised him as his own Rama and gave him the jewel and his daughter Jambavati. Krishna returned the jewel to Satrajit, who, ashamed, gave him his daughter Satyabhama in marriage. Even afterwards, the jewel brought only trouble to those who tried to seize it.

The jewel did not stay with those who grasped at it. Krishna, who did not want it, lacked nothing.
