Enni orukarumam yaarkkumsey onnaathu / Punniyam vantheythu poathallaal - kannillaan / Maangkaay vizhaverintha maaththiraikkoal okkumae / Aangkaalam aakum avarkku

Meaning

No one can bring a task to completion by planning alone; it succeeds when merit ripens. Like a mango that falls to a stick thrown by a blind man, things happen when their time comes.

Explanation

However much we plan, no task is accomplished by thought alone. It comes to fruit when merit ripens. Avvaiyar's image is lovely: a blind man throws a stick, it happens to strike a mango, and the mango falls. When the time comes, things happen just like that.

This is not a verse telling us to stop trying. The blind man did throw the stick, and had he not thrown it, no mango would have fallen. Effort is our duty; the timing of the fruit is not in our hands.

One who understands this does not break in failure or grow proud in success. Such a person keeps doing good and waits with patience.

Valmiki Ramayana, Bala Kanda; Kamba Ramayanam

Ahalya's Long Wait

From the Valmiki Ramayana, Bala Kanda. Under the curse of the sage Gautama, Ahalya lived for many thousands of years in the hermitage, unseen by anyone, living on air and doing penance. The curse would end on the day Rama, son of Dasharatha, came there; then she would be made pure.

The years passed, and no amount of wishing could bring that day sooner. Then one day Vishwamitra, taking Rama and Lakshmana to Mithila, led them into that hermitage.

As Rama stepped in, Ahalya appeared, shining. Rama and Lakshmana bowed at her feet, and she received them as honoured guests. Gautama came and was united with her. In the Kamba Ramayanam she lies as a stone and comes back to life when the dust of Rama's feet touches it.

Thousands of years of penance ripened in a single moment. When the time came and the penance had ripened, it happened.

To reflect on

Is there something you have worked hard for that has not come yet? Can you keep trying and wait for the fruit with patience?
