Explanation

No one can ruin those destined to rise; no one can save those destined to go; no one can stop those whose fate it is to beg. That, says Avvaiyar, is the truth of this world.

The verse comforts in two ways. We need not live in fear that others are out to destroy us; when the Lord protects, no one can do us harm. At the same time, we should not be proud enough to think we can protect everything with our own hands.

This is not a call to idleness. It is a call to the peace of doing our duty and leaving the outcome to God.

Srimad Bhagavatam, Book 7

The Lord Who Protected Prahlada

From the Srimad Bhagavatam, Book 7. The demon king Hiranyakashipu declared himself God. His son Prahlada, though, thought of Narayana without ceasing. Enraged, the father resolved to kill his own son.

He had soldiers strike him with weapons, but they were useless. He had him trampled by wild elephants, bitten by venomous snakes, fed poison, thrown from a cliff and cast into fire. Nothing touched the boy.

At last Hiranyakashipu demanded, 'Where is your God? Is he in this pillar?' and struck it. From that pillar Narasimha burst forth and destroyed him, then took Prahlada lovingly into his arms.

All the might of an emperor could not destroy Prahlada, who was meant to live. And all his boons could not save Hiranyakashipu, who was meant to fall.

To reflect on

What are you most afraid of right now? Can you do your part and leave the rest to God?
