Explanation

Offering the three fruits, mango, jackfruit and banana, to Ganesha is a Tamil custom. He is a simple god who loves them. There is beauty in the contrast of the great elephant-faced Lord riding a tiny mouse: the great and the small are one to Him.

Three words here carry great depth: 'now', 'as a mother', and 'of His own accord'. Grace does not come someday; it comes now. The devotee did not go searching; the Lord Himself rose and came, like a mother. Just as a mother runs to her child before it even cries.

'The first five syllables' are Na-ma-si-va-ya, the life-mantra of the Shaivas. Ganesha is Shiva's son, so what He first gives is His father's holy name. The five syllables return at the very end of the Agaval (line 69). This mantra holds the whole poem at both ends.

Kanda Puranam (Kachiyappa Sivacharyar)

How the Demon Gajamukha Became the Mouse

From the Kanda Puranam. The demon Gajamukha performed fierce penance and won a boon: 'Let no weapon ever bring my death.' With that power he oppressed the gods. Every day he forced them to stand before him and do thoppukaranam, holding their ears and bobbing up and down in submission.

The gods appealed to Shiva, and Shiva sent Ganesha. Ganesha fought the demon. Knowing that no weapon could kill him, Ganesha broke off one of His own tusks and hurled it. That tusk, which was no weapon, pierced the demon's chest.

The fallen demon turned into a huge bandicoot and leapt at Him again. Ganesha climbed onto it and sat upon it. At that very moment the demon's pride was destroyed. He bowed to Ganesha and was blessed to be His vehicle forever.

The thoppukaranam the gods were once forced to do before a demon, we now do before Ganesha with love. Even the one who was struck down receives grace: He takes even His enemy as His own, as a mother would.

To reflect on

Has there been a moment in your life when you felt grace coming toward you, rather than you going to seek it?
