Meaning

The sharp spear that drank up the sea, so that the sea's fish rolled in mud, the hoods of the serpents, the moon and the sun were shaken, the bowels of the clouds were churned, the sorrows of the gods ended and the rejoicing gods were freed from prison, women in the streets of mountain-like mansions scattered red paddy and pearls, the Ganga and other rivers found their courses and the ocean became dry ground. O fierce spear, hurled so that the demon hosts who opposed him broke apart, by Murugan, Kumara, the six-faced one, the beloved younger brother of the elephant-faced god with fragrant rut-streaming cheeks, white tusk, leaf-like ears and an eye on his brow; who embraces both the daughter of the gods and the peahen of the hunter clan of the mountain caves!

Explanation

The tradition is that when Sura hid in the sea, the spear dried the sea itself. When the gods are freed, women scatter paddy and pearls in the streets: a lovely picture of victory celebrations.

From the Mahabharata, Vana Parva

Agastya who drank the ocean

The asuras called Kalakeyas hid in the ocean by day and came out at night to kill sages. The gods appealed to Agastya. Agastya drank the whole ocean in a single gulp. With nowhere left to hide, the asuras were defeated by the gods. Drying the sea is a sign of exposing hidden evil.
