Meaning

The tall, mighty spear: as if the gods, with nectar in their mouths, came joyfully and clasped its feet, saying 'Grant us victory', when they saw its red hilt set with the nine rare gems; as if the seven seas, churned up when the long dark ocean was burned, begged 'Protect us'; as if the high mountains with their dense crests begged 'Save us'. O spear in the red hand of Shanmukha, lord worshipped by the gods, who rides the war-peacock: the peacock that seizes alone the king of serpents, with his dancing hood marked with dark eyes, his shining crest, his poison fangs and his fierce, fire-spitting eyes, and dances on the green mountain peak like a dark rain cloud, to the beat of 'thai-thimith'.

Explanation

In the first half gods, seas and mountains all seek refuge with the spear, for it burned the ocean and split Krauncha. The second half shows Murugan's peacock, dancing with a serpent held in its grip. Peacock and serpent together are a sign of grace that has mastered pride and venom. The poet even sets the dance syllables 'thai-thimith' inside the verse, so we hear the peacock's steps.

Mahabharata, Adi Parva

Garuda Frees His Mother

From the Mahabharata, Adi Parva. Garuda's mother Vinata was tricked in a wager and became the slave of Kadru, mother of the serpents. The serpents said, 'Bring us the nectar of immortality from heaven and we will free your mother.' Garuda overcame the gods, brought the nectar and freed his mother, but Indra took the nectar away before the serpents could taste it. From then on, it is said, the king of birds was the serpents' foe; the peacock too is a bird that masters the serpent.
