Meaning

The sharp spear that won glory and pre-eminence, so that in their games of ball and of pebbles, on the shining swing, in song and in dance, the apsaras with fresh fragrant flowers in their hair, and women like Sachi, Indra's queen, sing and dance with love, praising the might that cut down the swords of the old enemies and restored Indra's kingdom to him. It is the spear in the beautiful hand of Murugan: the boon-giving Guru who gave the rare, perfect teaching to Shiva, whose matted locks carry the waves of the Ganga; who raised the rooster banner with its comb red as the flame-of-the-forest flower; whose chest wears woven garlands of clustered kadamba, vetchi, blue lily, red kanthal and koothalam flowers.

Explanation

The spear's victory does not end on the battlefield. In the freed heaven, celestial women sing its praise even while playing ball or swinging. The second half of the verse draws Murugan himself: the Guru even to Shiva, the bearer of the rooster banner, garlanded with flowers of the hills. Kadamba, vetchi and kanthal are all flowers of the kurinji, the mountain land that is Murugan's own.

Thaipusam tradition, Skanda Purana

The Spear the Mother Gave

From the Thaipusam tradition. When Murugan set out to face Surapadma, Goddess Parvati gathered all her power and gave it to him as a spear. Tradition holds that this was on the day of the Pusam star in the month of Thai. That is why on Thaipusam devotees carry kavadis and walk to Murugan's temples. The vel is not merely a weapon; it is the mother's love and wisdom placed in her son's hand.
