Periya Puranam, the life of Karaikkal AmmaiyarThe Mother Who Walked to Kailash on Her Head
From the Periya Puranam. In Karaikkal lived a devotee of Shiva named Punithavathi. One day she gave one of two mangoes her husband had sent home to a hungry devotee of Shiva. When her husband asked for the second mango, she prayed and a new fruit appeared in her hand. Seeing this, her husband grew afraid and left her.
Punithavathi prayed to the Lord to take away her beautiful body, and received the form of a gaunt spirit. From then on her whole life belonged to the Lord. When she went to Mount Kailash, she would not tread on the holy mountain with her feet, so she climbed it walking on her head. Uma was amazed and asked about her, and Shiva said, 'She is the mother who cares for us,' and greeted her as 'Ammai', Mother.
When the Lord asked what boon she wanted, she said: 'Undying, joyful love; freedom from birth; if I am born again, never to forget You; and to sit beneath Your feet and sing while You dance.' Tradition says she sits to this day beneath the Lord's dance at Thiruvalangadu. She is the living example of the tenth song's resolve: whatever happens, 'I will not let You go.'
